Case Study: An example of a specific situation involving a particular individual or group used to explain how the situation was handled and what the outcome was. NGOs can use as case studies examples of other programs previously attempted or completed by other organizations. They can provide key insight into potential strengths and weaknesses of certain strategies previously employed by others.
CBO: Community Based Organizations, also called grassroots organizations, are a kind of NGO comprised of members who join to further their mutual interest. Examples include youth groups, women’s associations, and credit circles.
Code of Conduct: A public document outlining the minimum standards of operation of an NGO.
Contingency: A category in your budget, representing 5% of the total, and designated to pay for expenses related to unexpected developments during the course of your project.
Core Message: The basic information your media awareness campaign wants to disseminate. It includes the situation about which you want to raise awareness, the solution you are advocating, and a public action people can take to alleviate the problem.
Cost-effective: Using the least amount of money necessary to successfully complete the project.
CSO: A civil society organization includes NGOs concerned with advocacy, research, humanitarian assistance, or other development issues.
Cumulative Costs: Costs accumulated over a period of time specified in the budget.
Dissolution: The process whereby the Board of Directors dissolves the organization. After dissolution, the organization no longer exists.
Donors: Government agencies, corporations, private foundations, individuals, international donors, religious institutions, NGOs, and other organizations that offer grants, contracts, and funds to NGOs to cover expenses related to their projects and general operation. NGOs that receive grants from the government maintain their independence from the government and remain non-governmental organizations.
Evaluation: The process of determining the strengths and weaknesses of your project after the project has been completed.
Expenditures: The amount of money your organization is spending within a specific period of time.
Focus Group: A sample of individuals brought together so that the NGO can ask questions and lead discussions about certain issues for a proposed program in order to gain input and understanding about the individuals’ thoughts and concerns about a given topic.
Goal: The concrete means by which an organization hopes to achieve its mission.
